She got one of the early copies of my book and wrote this in an email to me (her comments bolded and indented): I am just finishing reading your book and I hope you are already working on its sequel. I told her it would depend on how this book did writing a book is a BIG project MY hope for your book is that job seekers dont just scan the table of contents and decide they dont want to paint numbers on curbs, etc, and leave the book unexplored. This is my hope and my fear, really.  If I picked up the book and looked at the LIST of ideas in the table of contents, I probably would not buy it.  But, if you read the stories and experiences and tips that are in almost every idea/chapter, that is where you get the good stuff You are so right that its value is in providing kindling, sparks, catalysts for HOPE. This book is 99% hope and catalyst, and 1% list of ideas. People need to read it not to necessarily to find THEIR next idea there, but to fan the flames of their own imagination. Humans are much smarter than we think.  If you think the list is limited at 51 ideas, or 501 ideas, you are wrong.  YOU might have something completely unique to offer. Entrepreneurship is a spectrum Find out where you are The world of entrepreneurship is typically one of black and white. Magazine covers are full of people who have given up their lives to grow a billion dollar tech company. And the phalanx around those people are the entrepreneurs who want to sell a big company themselves. Which means long hours, huge tradeoffs, and participation in a hard-core boys club. In that view, entrepreneurship is only for an intrepid few. They are young with no responsibility, or they are rich, with a huge paid or unpaid  support system. But I think there is a much more broad way to think about entrepreneurship. Here are four models for entrepreneurship that no one talks about. See if you find something thats a good fit for you. 1. Professional sports. When you think about entrepreneurship its important to include ideas beyond the office. Professional athletes run the gamut from loving to be told what to do to loving to work for themselves. A good example is April Ross, a silver medal winner in Olympic beach volleyball. She was a star on indoor volleyball teams in high school and college. She could have gone on to play indoor volleyball in Europe and then play on the indoor Olympic team for the US. But she said she turned to beach volleyball because she couldnt stand the highly structured life of indoor volleyball. Indoor volleyball has six players on the court, and you have to practice constantly together to know where everyone is going to be at every moment. You workout together, you practice together, and you travel together. Its a regimented life. With beach volleyball, you can workout by yourself and you only have to coordinate with one other person. In beach doubles each team has a coach, but unlike indoor volleyball, the team, rather than the coach, runs the show. What Ross was really saying is that she chose to be an entrepreneurial professional athlete. There will be no exit. No big sale of the company. But she works for herself, and she makes her own schedule. 2. Freelance work. Some freelancers run their lives as if they are working for a company. At the other end of the spectrum, some freelancers blend the line between freelancing and entrepreneurship. For most people, freelancing is a way to get more control over your life. For a wide range of reasons, people dont want to go into an office every day. If you are booking gig after gig to pay the bills, you are, in effect, running your own business. Its a lifestyle business that has the goal of creating a stable life. This is the opposite of a tech startup which creates a very unstable life that allows you to play a lottery game with a potentially big exit. In the freelance world, you could aim for low-paying steady jobs, or you could aim to collect high-budget clients that allow you to hire other people to do the work. Further down the spectrum would be a freelancer who creates a brand identity for the freelance business and collects high-paying clients. Its a higher risk game: you need a pool of big clients and they have to be consistent with your brand. But the exit potential emerges if you take that risk: Sapient, for example, is an agency that grew from freelance gigs to a branded company and then to an exit. 3. Outsourcing  your own job. Cassie works at my new company, Quistic. Her job is sales and shes a typical sales person in that shes got a million ideas for how to get people to buy, and she has a million ways she wants me to tweak the product so she can sell it, but she hates doing the detailed, repetitive task of sending email inquiries. So I check up on her. I say, Cassie, send me your sales pipeline at the end of the day, and she says Okay, yeah, which I have learned means, I hate that so much. But then one day she said, Oh. Sure, great. Ill get that to you right now. I got scared. It turns out that Cassie hired someone to do that part of her job. And all the other parts she hates. Alex, who works with us, said, Thats crazy! Arent you upset? I am not. Cassie is totally entrepreneurial. Before she was working with me, she was taking my course about launching your own business, but she doesnt have the risk profile to do it on her own. I love that she started a little business inside of our business. She hired someone to do work that held her back from making bigger sales, which is exactly what entrepreneurship isfinding a way to make money that other people are missing. 4. Creative obstinance. There is a type of person who insists on making movies, writing novels, playing music, or some other of those annoyingly impossible and low-paying dream-boat lives, all of them starving artists. But thats out of fashion. Its not fun to starve, and most parents will let you live at home anyway. But maybe most important is that its  difficult to do good art if you are cant meet your basic living requirements. This means that most artists today are also entrepreneurs. Some people are more entrepreneur than artistsAndy Warhol set the standard for this. Todays version is more like Damien Hirst  (pictured up top), who hires forty people to produce paintings of lots of dots that sell for millions of dollars. A good movie about the entrepreneurial nature of art is Exit Through the Gift Shop. Its breathtaking, actually. You must see this movie if you want to be an art-world entrepreneur. If you book yourself on music tours you are running your own business. Its focused on the music, and you probably hate the drudgery of calling people and booking gigs. But you know what? Tech startup founders just want to run with their idea and hate that they have to spend their time calling investors and pitching them. Writers also are entrepreneurs. Its unlikely that they will find a publisher that is competent at marketing a book online. So its up to writers to figure out how to sell their book. And even if you do sell your book, youll probably have to sell something else to support a family. Ramit Sethi is a great example of how a book author became an entrepreneur. Ramit has built such a robust business that he could probably exit it at some pointthat is, it could run just fine without him because he has built such a trusted brand for his information products under the name Iwillteachyoutoberich. Miranda July is at the other end of the spectrum. Her advertising for her book is phenomenal. This is so fun to watch that that I loved her before I read the book. And I bought the book.  Miranda July is not committed to building a Ramit Sethi type brand. She just wants to write books. But both are entrepreneurs. So instead of beating yourself up that you are not starting your own company, think about where you fit on the spectrum. Landing on the cover of Fast Company is not the only model. We each have our own capacity for starting something up. And each of us will succeed if we get to our right spot in the spectrum.

Self-organizing motorcycles - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Every year, on the last thursday in march, motorcyclists from all over Denmark meet in Copenhagen. This is the day when Bakken (an amusement park outside town) opens, and it has become an event for thousands of motorcyclists. The most fantastic thing about it is that nobody organizes it. Theres no planning committee, no sponsors, no management, no advertising, no participation fee, nothing. Motorcycle riders know about it, and all day long they arrive from all over the country, parking their bikes all up and down N?rrebrogade and adjacent streets. The whole thing started around 15 years ago, with just a few friends meeting at a certain cafe, to drive out to Bakken. This year they were expecting 8.000 bikes. At around 7 oclock, everybody starts their bikes, and begin the 20km drive from central Copenhagen out to Bakken. And for one hour, the motorcycles own the road. The Police block off all the side roads on the route, so the cars cant drive it. You dont have to worry about traffic lights and the speed limits are pretty much forgotten too. You can even see the really bold guys driving long stretches on one wheel only. Every conceivable type of motorcycle is in attendance, from japanese supersports cycles to Harleys, from three-wheel mini-cars to huge Goldwings with trailers and sidecars. I stood watching the parade for at least half an hour, and some of the highlights for me were: * A couple of Goldwings with a HUGE number of lights onem. They looked like christmas decorations on two wheels. * Closing my eyes and just enjoying the sounds. From the high-pithced whine of the sports cycles to the deep bass rumbles of the Harleys. * An off-road bike going by on one wheel. * Across the road from where I stood, two young women were waving non-stop for at least twenty minutes. Passing motorcyclists waved, or honked their horn. * Approaching the parade, and hearing the sounds from 500 meters away. * A little three-wheel minicar swerved suddenly on the road, almost falling over he was just showing off. * The smell of the exhaust in the air. It was beautiful! To me this shows, that if something has enough pull, no organization is needed. You dont need to do anything to make this great event happen. Actually, if you tried to engineer or design it, youd probably end up with something that was nowhere near as good as it already is. The event is also remarkably stable. Even in bad weather, when the last thursday in march is cold and rainy, thousands of riders still show up. The attraction for the riders is of course the chance to gather, to show of your bike, to celebrate the coming of spring and the beginning of another motorcycle season. So the reason, the attraction is there. And when that pull is strong enough, no organization, no planning, no work is necessary! Thanks for visiting my blog. Are you ready to turn your Dream Into Action - When I Grow Up In September of 2013, I started working with Paula Jenkins. A Senior Project Manager for an advertising company, Paula was in her early 40s with a 3+ hour daily commute and a toddler at home. She thought she wanted to be a full-time retreat leader, but she was fuzzy on both the details (how do I save up? how is it not too scary? how to I just start speaking about my passion and get others to listen and get noticed?) and the commitment. Was that what she  really wanted to do? Would that be her grown-up, passionate career? Paula was obviously smart, creative, and driven, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her. But,  to be honest,  I had some low  expectations  when it came to her follow-through. A full-time job, a 3+ hour commute, AND a toddler? I expected there to be lots of excuses about there not being time to do her homework, and lots of unfinished assignments.   Happily, I couldnt have been further from the truth. Paula came to every session with her homework done,  notes written about the process, and then usually something extra she took to doing on her own! She was The Excuse Buster in my book, and I invited her on my Create Your Dream Career course to have her share her tips on having a busy life and making (not finding!)  the time to do the freakin work anyways. Thats us in the pic above! By the time we wrapped our sessions that December, she had been blogging regularly on  Welcoming Spirit. Hosting retreats was still part of the business plan, but she later enrolled in Courageous Coaching Training  to become a certified life coach and add a new element to her work. We kept in touch regularly, and Paula was keen on putting together a retreat for my Grads those whove worked with me one-on-one for at least 12 sessions (theres almost 300 of them!). In September of 2014, she emailed me with some thoughts on the theme and location, all around  balance, excuse busting, self-accountability and  re-focusing. I read her thoughts. I felt her excitement. And I  took a deep breath and told her that this is her retreat.
